Sis, Natural Hair isn’t Hard, You just don’t Know Your Hair.
Sis, Natural hair isn’t hard. You just don’t know your hair.
& that’s ok. I’m here to help. I’m going to help you manage your hair with items found in your kitchen. Say what?! Yes, you read correctly.
Let’s begin. Black women have not had the luxury of being themselves. We have had to cover our hair due to jealously. (Check out this video on the tignon laws https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etuKQnVKJeM). Due to racism, ignorance, and a lack of accepting what’s different. Although times are changing with acts like The Crown Act (https://www.thecrownact.com/).
My point is that I understand why we don’t know our hair. We are overwhelmed trying to find the best for our hair. Concerned with what hair type we have (doesn’t matter in hair care by the way!), what products work best, what methods we should try next. L.O.C / L.C.O, Max hydration? Maybe Rice water will help? Sulfur 8 mixed with JBCO? The list goes on.
What if I told you none of it was necessary. What if I told you that you could style your hair with the foods you eat? I am.
Hold on, let me give you some recipes and examples that you can try TODAY!
1.) Water & Olive Oil – Moisturizer
Use Olive Oil as you would use gel in a wash and go. Actually this should be done like a wash and go. Apply olive oil to your hair, Hop in the shower, take one of those super hot showers women like to. Soak your hair. You’ll notice that the olive oil & heat make your hair easier to detangle. If this doesn’t work for you, you didn’t use enough Olive Oil. Add more sis. You will find that your hair is soft and your curls are defined. Whatever your version of defined is. Keep in mind, that’s different for everyone. Stop expecting your hair to do what someone else’s does. You are comparing apples to oranges.
“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”
Let’s apply that here directly.
Everyone has good hair. But if you judge your tresses by their ability to do what the next persons does, you will never love your hair.
2.) For dry, brittle hair:
Olive Oil, Mayo, 2 eggs – Deep Conditioner / Cowash
Deep conditioner: I don’t measure, sorry I’ll start. It’s always worked to give my hair a pick me up. Mix to the consistency of conditioner. Adds shine, strength, and plenty of protein. Keep on your hair and scalp for 30 minutes rinse out. Style as usual.
Cowash: The same process, add 8 drops of tea tree essential oil. Rinse out in 15 minutes instead of 30. Style as usual.
Olive oil is greasy, try grapeseed oil if you care. I also noticed in my trials that peppermint essential oil combined with olive oil makes it less oily to the touch.
We can do this and I’m right here with you. It’s not hard. It’s simple and once you understand your hair, it’s super easy. It’s a learning curve for many of us, but we can learn. I’ve learned and I’ll teach you. With a kitchen stocked of essentials, we can take care of our hair. We can learn our hair. Sis, are you ready?
Remember, it’s called a Hair Journey. This is a process that’s physical, emotional, and mental. You’re going to cry. You’re going to stare at yourself in the mirror and try to find beauty. Even though it’s looking right back at you. You’re going to want to cover your hair. You are fighting against everything you were taught about beauty simply by being you. You are beautiful and I’m going to help you realize it. Now it is the perfect time to learn you. So, let’s study.
